He was killed just hours after filing his certificate of candidacy (COC) before the local Commission on Elections (Comelec) office.
Climaco was in transit to downtown Tungawan when his vehicle was ambushed by unidentified armed men at around 4 p.m. Monday, Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Wilter Palma said in a statement.
The mayor was killed on the spot, while six others were wounded, including Tungawan Vice Mayor Abdurauf Abison.
Operatives from the Special Forces and the Philippine National Police (PNP) have been dispatched to conduct hot pursuit operations.
